H. Upmann Ediciones Limitadas
Back to the limited editions of one of the oldest Habanos brands!
Launched in 2000, Ediciones Limitadas are presented every year at the Habano Festival in Cuba one year before they are introduced to the market. Habanos S.A generally produces three or four Ediciones Limitadas per year, except for 2015 when only two of them were produced.
Initially cigars for Edición Limitada were dressed with a wrapper leaf that had been aged for at least two years and came exclusively from the top level of the tobacco plant, in order to obtain a unique deep dark color. Since 2007 all the tobacco leaves used for the production of cigars (filler, binder and wrapper) are aged for a minimum of two years.
The Ediciones Limitadas program only offers cigars made according to the "Totalmente a Mano" tradition from carefully selected leaves and respecting the brand's original blend. The only difference lies in the size of the vitola. The Ediciones Limitadas are special sizes and are no longer included in the regular catalog of the brands.
However, it may happen that some of them join the regular production afterwards because of their popularity. For example, the H. Upmann Magnum 50 was first released as the limited edition series in 2005 and was then added to the regular catalog of the brand in 2008.
The Ediciones Limitadas are generally produced by the so-called "global" brands such as Bolívar, Cohiba, Cuaba, H. Upmann, Hoyo de Monterrey, Montecristo, Partagás, Punch, Quai d'Orsay (who joined the program this year as a result of the brand’s openness to the world), Ramón Allones, Romeo y Julieta and Trinidad. Other brands of Habanos classified as "local" and "multi-local" participate instead in regional editions program.
Each cigar in Edición Limitada is dressed with a double ring. The main ring is usually the one that dresses the standard vitolas of the brand, but can also be a replica of an old ring used in the past.
The second ring is golden and bears the mention "Edición Limitada" in black colour along with the year of production. However, the first Ediciones Limitadas of 2000 did not have the year stamped on the second ring. This second ring is also placed on the corner of the box just like for regional editions.
The program started with Hoyo de Monterrey and the Particulares cigar. The first Edición Limitada by H. Upmann was released in 2005.
