The beautiful range of The Macallan’s colours.
The Macallan was founded in 1824 by Alexander Reid on a plateau above the Spey River in north-eastern Scotland. The distillery is surrounded by the estate of 150 hectares, at the heart of which is a famous "Easter Elchies House". The latter, by the way, can be found on the logo of the brand.
Since its foundation, The Macallan Distillery has been searching for the best quality in order to create exceptional single malts. With this philosophy The Macallan has gained a reputation of one of the best single malt whisky’s producers in the world. The whiskies are created with traditional methods and great know-how placing wood at the heart of creations.
"The Masters Decanter Series" whisky collection, no doubt, represents perfectly this principle. This series features a magnificent range of The Macallan’s natural colours. They are obtained by using oak casks that used to contain sherry. These casks play a major role in determing the whisky’s quality, its rich natural shades and its unique aromas and flavours. Sourced, crafted, toasted and seasoned under the watchful eye of The Macallan Master of Wood, the hand-picked casks are delivered to the demanding specifications of The Macallan Master Distiller and his team. Once in casks, the maturing spirit would rest there as many years as needed to get the Macallan appellation.
The Macallan Reflexion:
A bold and full-bodied single malt of an intense natural colour! "Reflexion" embodies the principal influence of first fill sherry seasoned oak casks. This exceptional single malt takes its colour and flavour from maturation in small barrels called "hogshead", allowing the whiskey to come into contact with a larger surface of wood. This interaction gives this whisky a complex character influenced by both Spanish and American oak casks. Reflexion is a celebration of floral and vanilla notes, punctuated by touches of fresh apple and apricot. The slight initial touch of citrus zest accompanied by an oak note continues into a delicate sweetness of lemon and orange. The finish brings boiled sweets and a touch of toasted oak and is medium and smooth.
The Macallan No.6:
A rich and elegant single malt of a deep colour! No. 6 brings together the art of whisky making and Lalique's fine craftsmanship: a wonderful whisky wrapped in an elegant crystal decanter. This rich and complex single malt draws its unique natural color and character from first fill sherry seasoned oak casks, crafted in Spain by the craftsmen of Jerez de la Frontera, the region of sherry production. No. 6 is a seductive, dark whisky with a typical Macallan character. Dense and sumptuous on the palate, it offers aromas of fruit cake, along with notes of grapes, dates and figs. Apples, sultanas, orange then ginger, nutmeg, cinnamon and hints of clove form an exceptional aromatic bouquet. The finish offers smooth and elegant oak notes.
The Macallan M:
A single malt of exquisite complexity and character! "M" is the fruit of an unprecedented collaboration between three masters of their crafts who had a common goal: to create the most sophisticated whisky in the world. Matured in some of the richest and rarest casks of the distillery, the M is then enclosed in a Lalique crystal decanter. This whisky offers a complexity and a sumptuous intensity rarely encountered in a single malt. The palate entry is about rich and pleasant spicy notes, releasing gradually all their viscosity. A smoked touch comes back and forth. The heavier raisin and sultana flavours take over, meandering to a long full finish.
