E.P. Carrillo Pledge

The expression of Ernesto Perez Carrillo's vision.

Pledge is the third release in the "Perez Carrillo: Generations Honored" series after La Historia, launched in 2014 and Encore, in 2018. Only the cigars of this line are allowed to carry the name "Perez Carrillo", which has been known in the cigar industry for years. This line is presented as a box pressed of 10 or 20 units depending on the chosen vitola.

2020 marks Ernesto Perez Carrillo's 50th year in the cigar industry and releasing the Pledge collection during this special year is a true honor for him. The line, which showcases the evolution of his blending skills, is a tribute to cigar aficionados around the world.

Like all the other cigars of the brand, the 3 vitolas of the Pledge collection are made in "La Tabacalera Alianza" factory in the Dominican Republic. However, after spending 6 months testing different blends and assemblies, Ernesto finally found the perfect wrapper for these cigars: the Connecticut Habano, a variety of Cuban seeds grown in the United States. The filler comes from Nicaragua and finally the binder from the island of Sumatra in Ecuador.

Small review of the 3 different cigars:

Let's start with the Prequel, it is presented as a Robusto (50 x 127 mm), a module that appears in different collections of the brand, like "La Historia". It has established itself as one of the most rich, extremely well structured and interesting cigars in the tobacco industry. This performance has propelled the brand to the top thanks to its famous Prequel. Covered in a beautiful dark and elegant wrapper, this vitola offers a delicious blend of baking spices, black cherry and cedar. Its smoke, from which emanates a multitude of flavors is making it intriguing, complex and presents a medium-bodied cigar with a perfect draw.

Let's continue with the Sojourn, which is a Toro (52 x 152 mm). A cigar that the more experienced palates will appreciate because of the gradual evolution of its flavors, complexity and balance. This is a nice dark and oily cigar, with a wrapper that has a slight grainy texture, but is still very well constructed.

Finally, the Apogee which is the latest addition to the Pledge line, was launched in 2021 at the PCA Convention & Trade Show. Not only is it the 3rd module offered in this line, a Gordo (58 x 158 mm), it is also the thickest and longest of all options. Contrary to the cigars of the same range, it is produced in limited quantity of 3'000 boxes of 10 units, for a total production of 30'000 cigars. It shows a beautiful dark slightly oily wrapper and its meticulous and cushioned construction offers a characteristic firmness of a box pressed.

To close in beauty the Pledge collection, E.P. Carrillo announced in September 2022 the arrival of a new vitola in limited edition: the Pledge Lonsdale Limitada. As indicated in its name, it is presented as a Lonsdale (43 x 165 mm), a module that is also included in the limited edition La Historia collection. Contrary to the other cigars of the range which are only presented in boxes of 10 units, this one is produced in boxes of 20, and in only 1'500 examples. The total production is thus 30'000 cigars. Concerning its assembly, it remains the same: a Connecticut Habano wrapper cultivated in the United States, a Nicaraguan filler as well as an Ecuadorian binder. The whole is made in Dominican Republic in the Perez Carrillo's farm.

About the brand:

The roots of the Perez Carrillo family are found in Cuba, where Ernesto Senior was born in 1904. Since his early childhood, he was immersed in the world of tobacco thanks to his father who rolled and sold cigars in the heart of Havana. After working as a tobacco buyer for several years, he acquired a small factory called "El Credito", which launched his career as a cigar manufacturer and made him famous throughout the country. He was even elected to the Cuban Senate in 1954 and 1958.

His son, Ernesto Junior, the creator of "La Gloria Cubana" in the United States, had a real success in the 1990s. This brand, which propelled the family among the best cigar producers in the world, was bought in 1999 by the multinational General Cigar Company.

His children, Lissette and Ernesto III, will then propose to their father, to return to the sources, by making their own cigars, in family. In April 2009, they chose to establish themselves in an independent building of 12'000 square meters in the Zona Franca of Santiago, Dominican Republic. Immediately, they began the construction of the factory of their dreams and named it "La Tabacalera Alianza".

Thus, this factory will give birth to E.P. Carrillo cigars: there, the tobacco is fermented, aged and handrolled by experienced rollers, relearning their profession with a "Cuban style" rolling technique.

Ernesto Perez Carrillo Junior's insatiable desire to offer superior quality cigars led him to establish his plantations in the rich and fertile lands of Nicaragua, specifically in Esteli, Condega and Jalapa. Each of these regions is essential to the elaboration of the brand's unique blends. He also has plantations in Ecuador, dedicated to the cultivation of high quality tobacco leaves.

Today, E.P. Carrillo offers a wide range of cigars divided into 9 different collections: the Allegiance in partnership with Oliva Cigar Co; the Dusk in homage to the creation of the best cigars elaborated by the hands of the master; the Encore which offers a second part to the critically acclaimed collections; the INCH Maduro which honors larger gauges; the INCH Natural; the INCH Nicaragua; the New Wave Connecticut which celebrates the famous Ecuadorian wrapper; the Pledge presented today; and finally, the famous La Historia collection.
