El Rey del Mundo Kon Tiki 1973 Edición Regional Los Andes 2017
A majestic cabinet of 50 cigars in "109" format.
The "Los Andes" region has a new regional edition: the Kon Tiki 1973! This part of the globe, also called "Andino B.P.E." in Habanos language, includes three countries: Bolivia, Peru and Ecuador.
By naming this cigar "Kon Tiki" El Rey del Mundo wanted to pay homage to the eponymous maritime expedition led by Thor Heyerdahl and his five crew members in 1947. Their goal in taking up this incredible challenge was to prove to the world that the ancestors of Incas had gone to populate Polynesia in their time. Thus, from Callao to Peru, they traveled nearly 8,000 kilometers across the Pacific aboard the "Kon Tiki". The latter, an exact replica of the prehistoric rafts used by the South American Indians, allowed them to join the Polynesian islands of Tuamotu.
The vitola chosen by El Rey del Mundo for this regional edition is 109 (50 x 184 mm). This module, more commonly known as Double Robusto, is very complex to produce. Only a handful of master Torcedors are allowed to roll this format. The 109 was recently used by La Gloria Cubana for its Swiss regional edition, the Orgullosos!
The production of the Kon Tiki 1973 is limited to 1,200 cabinets only of 50 units each. This is the second time for a regional edition where cigars are displayed in that way, the first one was the Sancho Panza Eslavo Regional Edition Serbia 2014, also in a 109 format. The cigars are arranged on 4 levels (13-13-13-11). This presentation appeared for the first time in the 1960s before disappearing in 1973. The Kon Tiki "1973" is a reference to this splendid cabinet.
The tasting begins smoothly with fruity aromas. Its excellent draw allows to take advantage of the gradual rise of the cigar. This crescendo constitutes the true identity of Kon Tiki 1973 and is explained by the fact that its filler is composed of a single whole leaf of Ligero. This full-flavored, slow-burning leaaf adds strength to the mix. The final offers woody and roasted notes.
