Jean-Pierre Pellegrin

The conductor of the Domaine Grand'Cour.

In Peissy, in the canton of Geneva, there is a magnificent farm which is over 600 years old. In its centuries-old walls there is the Domaine Grand'Cour, which dates back to the 17th century. Today Jean-Pierre Pellegrin is the main conductor. As a worthy heir, he took over the family estate and decided to vinify the wines himself while his father was still delivering the estate's grapes to the cooperative. And when an expert like Jean-Pierre Pellegrin is at work, the level and quality of the wines are very high.

He started by doing major restoration works on the farm. He also built a wine storehouse, all in old stones to keep oak barrels and concrete amphoras. Some vintages rest under the 33-metre high vault in order to age in ideal conditions before becoming exceptional beverages. In the tasting room, one can admire relics of the past, restored with care and passion by this winemaker.

Today, Domaine Grand'Cour has 14 hectares and Jean-Pierre Pellegrin has become one of the emblematic figures of Geneva winemakers. He works his vines with the greatest care and rigour in the manner of a Swiss watchmaker. Gentle methods and yield control ensure high quality products. Over 25 grape varieties are cultivated on the hilly slopes of this region tempered by Leman Lake.

With sensitivity, Jean-Pierre Pellegrin vinifies his grapes in pure varieties or in blends to produce wines of absolute grandeur. The Grand'Cour Rouge, for example, composed of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet-Sauvignon, is one of the most elegant blends in the country, comparable to a Bordeaux wine. It has the typical suppleness that characterizes the best vintages of the canton of Geneva.

These precise and subtle wines are a credit to the terroir of Geneva and are very popular well beyond the borders of the canton and the country: it is one of the five best Swiss winegrowers honoured as a Swiss icon by the official Gault&Millau guide.
