Por Larrañaga Montecarlos
A unique vitola in the Habanos catalogue.
Machine-made until 2002, the Montecarlos is a very old cigar, introduced in the catalogue of Por Larrañaga before the Cuban Revolution of 1953. Still in production today, it is entirely made "Totalmente a Mano" since 2002, like the other two vitolas in the brand's regular catalogue.
The Montecarlos is a Deliciosos, otherwise known as Slim Panetela. With a cepo of 33 and measuring 159 mm, this vitola is not used by any other Habanos brand. Considering this, it in some ways reminds of the very famous Cohiba Lanceros, whose slender measurements give it a very elegant appearance.
Despite its age, the Montecarlos, like the Por Larrañaga brand, is not well known to occasional smokers. However, nostalgic aficionados and other vintage cigar lovers are familiar with the brand because of the cigars quality to perfect with time.
Presented in boxes of 25 cigars, the Montecarlos has a beautiful dark and oily wrapper, with some present veins. While the wrapper colour within the same box is harmoniously uniform, it can vary from one box to another.
With its somewhat rustic appearance and its elegant golden band, the Montecarlos seems to come from another time.
On opening the box we are immediately seduced by an incredible smell of hay and tobacco. Once lit, this cigar brings delicious notes of vanilla and spices like nutmeg or cinnamon. The spices accentuate the cigar’s rich flavour profile.
In the second third of the cigar the aromas of cedar, coffee, vanilla and a spicy undertone are followed by a note of latte and fresh bread. The finish leaves a nice woody touch of latte on the palate.
In general, the Montecarlos, even though being a relatively mild cigar, offers an interesting aromatic profile. The ash has a good hold, the burn is even and the smoke is generous. Mild cigars are sometimes neglected by experienced aficionados who prefer more robust cigars because they connect smoothness with a lack of complexity. However, this Slim Panetela proves that this is not the case. This soft smoke, accessible to beginners, will for sure not disappoint the most demanding cigar lovers.
The Montecarlos is one of those soft and tasty cigars that can be adapted to all occasions and perfect for every day. Without any doubt, it will be a perfect choice for a fifty minute walk in the afternoon of a beautiful spring day.
