San Cristóbal de la Habana El Príncipe

A Minutos named in honour of El Castillo del Príncipe.

Upon its creation in 1999, the San Cristóbal de la Habana catalogue included only four vitolas: La Fuerza, La Punta, El Príncipe and El Morro. The latter one was discontinued in 2013. Each of them is a tribute to the fortresses built between the 16th and 18th centuries that defended Havana after the city was taken by the English.

The smallest of them, El Príncipe, is in our focus today. It was named after El Castillo del Príncipe, Prince's Castle in English. This military fort is located on the Loma de Aróstegui, a hilltop of 100 meters overlooking the city of Havana. This edifice played a decisive and determining role in the history of the city due to its dominant position. After the Battle of Havana, the fortress was used for different purposes, for example, as a jail, housing political prisoners, including José Martí.

As for the cigar, El Príncipe is a Minutos, otherwise known as Petit Corona. With a cepo of 42 and measuring 110 mm long, this vitola is quite old, introduced before the revolution by Bolívar with the Coronas Junior, by Partagás with the Shorts and by Ramón Allones with the Small Club Coronas. These are still in production today.

Due to its small diameter and small size, Minutos turns out to be more intense and releases rich aromas. Presented in boxes of 25 cigars, El Príncipe has a beautiful dark, oily and harmonious wrapper.

Before lightning, aromas of hay and leather are perceived, with a fine sweet touch.

Once lit, the first puffs are very light and offer floral notes. The refined sweetness that characterizes the San Cristóbal de la Habana cigars is well present.

The end of the first third brings the divine with notes of caramel. Delicate in the beginning, the cigar reveals then a set of lively and spicy but not peppery flavours. Indeed, the perceived spice is more akin to chilli than pepper and persists throughout the second third. The last part develops woody elements, punctuated by vegetal hints.

El Principe goes incredibly well with coffee. It will also be perfect as an aperitif, before lunch if you don't feel like taking a larger module. A short break, full of flavor!
