Brännland Iscider

An ice cider made with apples from one of the most northern orchards in the world!

The Brännland Cider story began in 2010 with the ambition to make a great artisanal cider on the Baltic coast of northern Sweden, using apples grown locally in the cold climate of the "Lying Land".

After two years of trial and error, discoveries and progress, Andreas Sundgren Graniti, the founder and his team came to the conclusion that the apple and the northern climate of Sweden were best suited for making ice cider.

Ice cider was developed in Quebec in the early 1990s. It is an ice wine made from apples rather than grapes. In 2005, a quality designation was established in Quebec. This designation indicates that the apple juice used to make ice cider must be concentrated using natural cold air.

Very few places in the world can guarantee a recurring cold season to meet the Quebec standard. Northern Sweden is one such place and winter temperatures, combined with Swedish apples, are the basic elements for making Brännland Iscider ice cider.

The juice is extracted from hand-picked winter apples in Västerbotten county on the Baltic coast and high-quality apples from a carefully selected producer in the heart of apple country in southern Sweden.

From the frozen apple juice, using the naturally cold outside temperatures, cider must is extracted with a natural sugar content, which is between 35 and 40° on the Brix scale.

It then has to be slowly fermented to become an amber-coloured ice wine. No additives such as sugar, alcohol or colouring agents are allowed in the production process. The result is a cider whose acidity level and natural sweetness are perfectly balanced.

Brännland - Iscider - 2018: The 2018 vintage of ice cider is marked by one of the best Swedish apple harvests of the last decade. During pressing, the juice showed high sugar levels without compromising the balance between acidity, sweetness and body which are the characteristics of the vintage. The spring fermentations were gentle and harmonious and took place in oak barrels at an even higher degree than in previous years. The Brännland Iscider 2018 will undoubtedly offer exceptional ageing potential.

Brännland - Iscider - Barrel aged barrique 2017: Every year, Brännland Cider sets aside a part of its production to be aged in 500-litre used Austrian oak barrels. After 12 months in the cask, the cider softens and becomes deeper and more complex, both in colour and palate. This 2017 vintage can undoubtedly be enjoyed on its own, chilled or at the end of a meal with cheeses and desserts.

Brännland ice cider is much more than just a cider. It is more like a very refined dessert wine, combining the acidity of fresh apples with the sweetness of autumn apples.

It will undoubtedly be one of the most surprising and revealing tastings you've experienced so far.
