Cohiba Presidential Celac Summit Humidor

A presidential humidor offered by Raúl Castro to his Chilean homologue: Sebastián Piñera.

As we said in the previous Grauer Journal, the cigar is a true national pride for Cubans and has therefore naturally become a diplomatic gift.

The humidor that we are presenting to you today is one of these special productions, exclusively intended as a gift to political figures. Indeed, it was produced for the 2nd Summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac) held in Havana in January 2014.

The latest of the continental organizations, the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac) met for a two-day summit, notably to denounce the economic and financial embargo imposed since 1962 by the United States on the Cuban communist regime. In the presence of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, the summit was opened by Cuban President Raúl Castro, who succeeded his brother Fidel to power in 2006.

Only 33 Cohiba Presidential Celac Summit humidors were produced. This number corresponds to the 33 Celac heads of state. Each of them was hand-delivered to each president by Raúl Castro himself. The one in the photo was given to Chilean President Sebastián Piñera. The Cohiba Presidential Humidor Celac Summit, represents a typical Cuban farmer’s hut and is in some ways reminiscent of the "Bohio" produced in the early 1960s, which was also intended for heads of state.

Inside, there are 38 Cohiba A cigars arranged in staggered rows (13-12-13) in the manner of Partagás 8-9-8. Each cigar is dressed with a personalised band bearing the logo of the event. The Cohiba A is a Gran Corona, otherwise known as Giant Corona, which is 235 mm long and has a cepo of 47. The vitola is used by Cohiba only for special productions. It can be found in the Cohiba Serie A Humidor of 2003, the Siglo XXI Millennium Humidor of 1999, the Cohiba 35 Aniversario Humidor of 2001 and the Subastas. Its generous dimensions imply the use of tobacco leaves of exceptional quality.

The only brand to offer the Gran Corona in its regular catalogue is Montecristo, with the Montecristo A and is to date the largest vitola still produced by Habanos. Moreover, only the Fabulosos from Partagás (a Giant Perfecto - 50 x 237mm) would be able to surpass it if it were still produced today.

The Cohiba Presidential Humidor Celac Summit is a very exclusive piece. As a "diplomatic present", it is a representation of the quintessential Cuban know-how and national pride!
