Romeo y Julieta Short Churchills Serie Sevilla Jar

In celebration of the famous Sevilla Humijar from the 1920s.

Launched in 2016 by Tabacalera S.L.U., the official importer of Habanos in Spain, the Serie Sevilla has just welcomed a new jar: the Romeo y Julieta Short Churchills Serie Sevilla. Like the other jars from the series, it is produced in a limited edition and is intended exclusively for the Spanish market. Inside, the jar contains Habanos that have been carefully aged for 8 years in the best storage conditions. Thanks to this maturation, the cigar wrapper has become darker and the blend has acquired a beautiful roundness, reaching its peak, with the aim of offering a memorable and enriching tasting experience.

The Romeo y Julieta Short Churchills Serie Sevilla jar is the fifth in the collection. It is the successor to the previous editions, dedicated to the brands Partagás, Montecristo, Hoyo de Monterrey and H. Upmann. Like them, the Romeo y Julieta jar is produced in a limited edition (1,500 pieces), individually numbered and with a classic design, depicting two men working in a tobacco plantation, affixed to the back of the jar.

The use of porcelain jars for Cuban cigars dates back to the end of the 18th century. This highly refined packaging was made famous by Partagás, which in the 1920s commissioned the artisans of La Cartuja to create the so-called "Sevilla Humijar". Located in Seville, La Cartuja is an earthenware factory founded in 1841 and at the time one of the most renowned in Europe. It was also appointed Official Supplier to the Royal House of Spain.

The popularity of the Sevilla Humijar among aficionados and collectors prompted Habanos to (re)introduce them through the Serie Sevilla, of which the Romeo y Julieta Short Churchills jar is the worthy heir today.

Unlike its older sisters, the Romeo y Julieta Short Churchills jar contains 19 cigars instead of the usual 21. Until now, 19 was the number of cigars present in the "Colección Vintage" jars, also produced in limited edition for the Spanish market and containing carefully aged Habanos. On the other hand, the Serie Sevilla and Colección Vintage Series stand out in particular for the colour of their decoration, brown for the former and blue for the latter.

Now that we have discussed the historical aspect of this special production, let's take a closer look at the vitola. The Short Churchills, from the regular catalogue of Romeo y Julieta, is a cigar well known amongst aficionados. It entered production in 2006 and is one of the most recent Robustos to be introduced into the Habanos portfolio.

To differentiate it from its standard version, they are dressed with a third band stamped "Serie Sevilla". The first two being the classic band of the brand and the one personalised with the name of the vitola.
Let's proceed with the ignition of this particular Short Churchills, which could be called "vintage" because of its minimum 8 years ageing, as evidenced by the inscription that crowns the decoration "torcidos antes de 2012". Opening a jar is always an exciting moment for an aficionado.

Visually, the cigar has a beautiful Colorado wrapper. To the touch, a hint of softness suggests a quality construction and, by extension, an excellent draw. With very little veining on the wrapper and a perfectly applied capote, the plastic of this Robustos looks good.

Raw, chocolate and dry earth aromas are perceptible. The easy ignition allows a hint of hay and woody flavours to come into play, sublimating a nice dominant chocolate taste. The end of the first third offers a "toasted" aromatic profile with notes of roasted coffee and burnt caramel.

As we enter the second third, the tasting becomes buttery and creamy, a flavour combination that marries marvellously with the chocolate, which is always present. A hint of pepper also adds a touch of bitterness to this very gourmet combination. The last third's starter gives us a few floral notes as well as a touch of mushroom. The chocolate has turned into a darker chocolate with hints of cedar. If the beginning of the tasting does not seem so far away from that of the "standard" Short Churchills, the difference is obvious at this end of the tasting. The bouquet has acquired a magnificent roundness and is free of any bitterness!

This Short Churchills Serie Sevilla offers a tasting full of delicacy and smoothness. It offers bold, frank flavours despite its age and is incredibly harmonious. Once again, thank you Mr. Time! Accompany it with a chocolate dessert or tiramisu, it will crown your meal with brio.

In addition to the quality of the cigars they contain, the Serie Sevilla jars are a strong element in an aficionado's collection. They are magnificent objects that inherit a prestigious past and highlight the skills of craftsmen working in the purest tradition of Spanish porcelain makers.
