Trinidad 50 Aniversario Humidor
A third commemorative humidor celebration in honour of the brand’s 50th anniversary.
As we mentioned in our article on Trinidad, the brand was created under the inspiration of "El Líder máximo" in 1969, three years after Cohiba. The two brands are closely linked by their common history. Indeed, both before being officially marketed to the public, in 1982 for Cohiba and 1998 for Trinidad, they were solely used as diplomatic gifts for foreign dignitaries, travelling to Cuba on official visits.
Although the brand is one of the youngest of Habanos S.A., Trinidad is very popular amongst initiated aficionados and already offers highly sought-after collector's items. Among them, the Farm House Humidor, the Trinidad 40 Aniversario and now the Trinidad 50 Aniversario, which we present to you today. The latter refers to the brand's past and celebrates its 50 years of existence.
Although Trinidad was created in 1969, it was not launched until almost 30 years later, in 1998. In that year, the brand was presented to the general public at a grand ceremony held in Havana at the Hotel Habana Libre. Opened in 1958, it was the largest hotel in Latin America at that time. It is still the largest hotel in Cuba and one of the tallest buildings on the island. With 27 floors, it has a commanding view of the capital.
The Habana Libre Hotel has played a fundamental role in the history of Trinidad. Its architecture, at the time entrusted to the renowned architects Welton Becket & Associates of Los Angeles and Lin Arroyo, the Cuban architect at the origin of Cuban modernism, was a great source of inspiration for the design of the Trinidad 50 Aniversario Humidor.
Elliptical in shape, unlike the hotel, the Trinidad 50 Aniversario Humidor raises, with a simple and intuitive movement, 10 presentation trays, each holding 5 cigars. The cinematic opening is majestic and foreshadows the revelation of a priceless treasure.
This case is full of precious details to guarantee a unique experience at each opening. The material chosen, such as ebony, leather and brushed brass combined, make this commemorative humidor a true masterpiece.
The design and production of each of the 100 humidors was assigned to the Italian company DeArt, whose expertise is well known. The two sons of DeART founder Giovanni de Munari, Alberto and Massimo, drew on the company's more than 50 years of expertise to create this humidor capable of holding 50 extremely rare cigars without compromising the perfect storage conditions they require.
Now let's talk about the precious content. The Trinidad 50 Aniversario has introduced two novelties for the brand. It is a Figurado, a first in the history of the brand, but it is also the first Trinidad not to be topped with a "perilla" (pigtail). Called Gloriosos, the Trinidad 50 Aniversario is 155 mm long and has a cepo of 59, which makes it a member of the relatively closed and exclusive circle of Double Pyramids, majestic vitolas hand-rolled for special productions.
Within the Trinidad vitolario, the 50 Aniversario steals the show from the Topes, which until now has been the vitola with the largest diameter. In the Habanos catalogue, the Trinidad 50 Aniversario is positioned just below the Cohiba 50 Aniversario, the module with the largest cepo ever rolled in Cuba: 60!
As we said in the introduction, the Cohiba and Trinidad brands are closely linked by their common history. However, Trinidad has always remained in the shadow of Cohiba, which is considered the more prestigious brand.
Each of the 100 pieces is individually numbered, from 001 to 100. The first one were auctioned in 2019 at the humidor sale during the XXI Festival del Habano in Cuba.
As the 50 Aniversario is only available in the eponymous humidors, the few collectors who will be lucky enough to own one of the 100 masterpieces produced will be in possession of one of the biggest work of art in history of the Trinidad brand and more widely of the history of Habanos.
We have not, as we usually do, a tasting, as the Trinidad 50 Aniversario is a very exclusive vitola.
Exclusive because of its characteristics but also because of the limited number of cigars rolled. Indeed, the Trinidad 50 Aniversario Humidor has been produced in 100 pieces and each of them contains 50 cigars, which gives us a total production of 5'000 Trinidad 50 Aniversario worldwide.
Since its creation, Trinidad somehow still has this slight mysterious feel about the brand and their cigars are mainly chosen by those who appreciate standing out of the crowd. These cigars are available only in very limited quantities, and this exclusivity is one of the main characteristics which is even more so reinforced by the add of such an extraordinary masterpiece, such as the 50 Aniversario Humidor.
