Coltelleria Saladini

Tuscan cigar cutters, heritage to a century-old tradition.

Not far from the city of Florence, in the region of Toscany, you’ll find the small town of Scarperia. Founded in 1306, this ancient medieval town was quickly nicknamed the "city of knives". Since its foundation, the city has been a major producer of cutting tools. This ancient art has made the city famous throughout the world.

It is an old one, dating back to the 15th century, when the first Master Knifemakers were established, thus organising the production and marketing of knives. Coltelleria Saladini was born in this cradle of artisan cutlery. In fact, the first evidence of Saladini knives dates back to the middle of the 19th century, when a census of the population carried out by the parish church revealed that a certain Saladini family actually was making knives as Master Knifemakers. Since then, generations of cutlers have followed in their footsteps until to this day. Today, Saladini has become a major company that continues to create products with the same passion and traditions inherited for over two centuries.

Today, this heritage is a beautiful reflection so well represented by the quality and style of Saladinis cutlery. However, in spite of these deep-rooted traditions, Leonardo Saladini, the founding president of Coltelleria Saladini, managed to inject a new dynamic of continuous innovation and research into the company. This has allowed the family business to constantly evolve while focusing on the future.

It was in 1984 that Leonardo embarked on the cutlery adventure alongside his uncle, Marcello Azzini. With him, over the years, he acquired the methods and secrets of the trade. In 1995, he decided to start his own business and created his collection of knives. In 1997, he opened Coltelleria Saladini in an atelier in Via Solferino, a historic street in the city that was once home to many cutlery shops. Over time, Leonardo greatly developed his business, reviving ancient traditions and heavily promoting the business.

A few years later, in 2002, Leonardo called on his long-time friend Giacomo Cecchi to join the Saladini adventure. In addition to his studies as an architect, Giacomo also completed a professional training course in the art of cutting tools. This enabled him to obtain the diplomas of Master Knifemakers and Artistic Metallurgy. A true key figure of the company today, Giacomo is now in charge of the creative side, designing and creating new products.

All the Saladini pieces are carefully handmade in the company's ateliers, where a handful of Master Knifemakers perpetuate these old traditions. From the raw material through the entire manufacturing process, to the finishing touches, everything is done on site.

Among the various stages of knife production, the handle is one of the most fascinating aspects of cutlery. Thanks to their experience and know-how, the Saladini Master Knifemakers shape and work with natural materials such as ox horn or olive wood. This allows us to offer a beautiful range of products made exclusively from materials that only nature can provide.

For the manufacture of the blades, the company is very selective in its choices of the raw material and uses mainly high end quality hardened stainless steel.

After being punched, sharpened and honed, each blade undergoes a specific heat treatment of tempering and annealing which, depending on the composition of the steel, determines the perfect scope of firmness to reach that sweat spot of optimum sharpness.

In addition to knives, Leonardo Saladini also decided to develop a magnificent collection of cutting accessories dedicated to the world of cigars. Indeed, before each tasting, the aficionados’ ritual begins with the cut. Thus, for several years now, the company has been developing a beautiful collection of pocket and table cigar cutters that so perfectly represents and reflects all the know-how and experience acquired during centuries in the art of knive craftsmanship.

Whether table or pocket, these cigar cutters offer an elegant and modern look. The blade bears the signature of the House, "Saladini Made in Italy" and allows the cigar to be cut with a laser sharp, surgical precision.

A hand-rolled cigar needs to be cut with a proper tool, which is why the sophisticated finish and blade are the main features of a Saladini cigar cutter. They work just as well for small cigars as for larger ones. Handmade by skilled Tuscan craftsmen from natural and traditional materials, they are the proud heritage of ancient traditions, born in Tuscany in the 15th century.
