Château de Laubade

The first Armagnac estate consisting of 105 hectares of vines in a single block.

Built in 1870 by Joseph Noulens, a French politician and French ambassador to Petrograd during the Russian Revolution, Château de Laubade has, through its history and its terroir, become an undisputed reference for Armagnac.

Located in Sorbets d'Armagnac, on the great terroirs of Bas-Armagnac, the property extends over no less than 105 hectares in a single block, making it the largest estate in Armagnac. These 105 hectares of vines are now managed using sustainable agriculture, which respects the environment.

In 1974, Maurice Lesgourgues, grandfather of the current managers of the estate, discovered Château de Laubade and literally fell in love with it.

He immediately understood that all the elements were present to make great Armagnacs and bought it. In search of excellence, he undertook the restructuring of the vineyard with the help of his son Jean-Jacques.

Since 1998, the estate has been in the hands of the third generation of Lesgourgues, the two brothers Arnaud and Denis, passionate and inseparable. Together, they are committed to maintaining the spirit of quality and the search for excellence that has driven the family for three generations.

This work, which began long ago, was rewarded in 2014 when Château de Laubade was awarded the prestigious Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant (EPV) label. The latter is a mark of recognition from the French government set up to distinguish French companies with excellent craft and industrial know-how.

Château de Laubade is one of the few estates to cultivate the four traditional grape varieties of the appellation: Ugni Blanc, Baco, Colombard and Folle Blanche. With more than 30 hectares of Baco, Château de Laubade ardently defends the most emblematic grape variety of Armagnac. It is this variety that gives the pedigree of the great Bas-Armagnacs as well as their capacity to improve in contact with wood for many years. At the same time, Château de Laubade also cultivates other grape varieties such as Plan de Graisse, Clairette de Gascogne and Meslier Saint François on an experimental basis.

The House's Armagnacs are classified into three collections:
Les Classiques: From V.S.O.P to Extra Single Estate, they are the result of different blends of eaux-de-vie, grape varieties and years, with an ageing process at least twice as long as that required by the appellation. They are the essential references for Château de Laubade. Each of them perfectly reflects the philosophy of the house: the expression of the terroir, the art of blending, the mastery of prolonged ageing. The result is a very richly aromatic eau-de-vie, with notes of honey, prunes, candied fruit, tobacco and hazelnut.

Les Hédonistes: Offering ten "Bruts de fût" vintages as well as the limited quantity Intertemporel No.5 (made up of a blend of 30 to 40 eaux-de-vie) and La Blanche Armagnac, offering a highly aromatic, fresh, supple and floral eau-de-vie, this collection offers Bas-Armagnacs of astonishing complexity, amplitude and aromatic richness. Each bottle is finished by hand and individually numbered to reflect its unique and exclusive character.

Les Millésimes: True testimonies of the Château's history (from a single year of harvest and distillation), these Bas-Armagnacs, ranging from 15 to 50 years of ageing in Gascony oak barrels, highlight the know-how and talent of the men and women who have been involved in Château de Laubade for generations.

Each vintage is unique, shaped by the vagaries of the climate, which vary from one year to the next, but also by the care of the cellar masters who have succeeded one another over the generations, each contributing their own specific know-how.

Each Laubade cellar master ages these eaux-de-vie separately in more than 3,000 400-litre barrels that the House itself makes from oak trees from several forests in Gascony, selected on the vine and then dried in the open air for a minimum of three years. These casks, spread over seven ageing cellars, constitute a real treasure, essential for the production of these great eaux-de-vie.

Château de Laubade's Bas-Armagnacs are now served in some of the world's finest palaces, as well as on many gourmet tables, thus contributing to the prestige of the Maison.

Recognised in France and throughout the world as a major player in the production of wines and spirits, the Lesgourgues family embodies excellence, an excellence that has been coveted for several generations.

Whatever the collection to which they belong, the Bas-Armagnacs of Château de Laubade will create rare moments of pleasure, testifying to the values of conviviality, luxury and authenticity, conveyed by Château de Laubade.

Tasting a Bas-Armagnac from Château de Laubade is an aesthetic journey to the heart of the Bas-Armagnac terroir, where the senses are subtly heightened. These Bas-Armagnacs are elaborated like pieces of art that can be discovered patiently.
