Diplomáticos No.1 Vintage 2000
A splendid Lonsdale that now belongs to the past.
As we said in our article dedicated to the brand, Diplomáticos offers today only one cigar in regular production: the Diplomáticos No.2. But this has not always been the case because at the launch of the brand, in 1966, it produced 5 cigars, including the little brother of the Diplomáticos No.2, the Diplomáticos No.1, which we suggest rediscovering today as a Vintage from year 2000.
The Diplomáticos No.1, having been discontinued in 2006, now belongs to the past. The one we are interested in today is a Cervantes (42 × 165 mm). Otherwise known as a "Lonsdale", the vitola would have been invented by Frank Warwick, one of the two distributors of the Rafael González brand for the English market at the time of its creation as a tribute to Lord Lonsdale, a British sportsman and nobleman, a great cigar lover of that era.
Although produced by most Habanos brands in the past, it is now only produced by Montecristo, a brand with which Diplomáticos has very close ties.
Indeed, Diplomáticos was originally intended to be a more affordable version of the popular Montecristo brand, mainly targeting the French market. In fact, Diplomáticos cigars are rolled in the José Martí factory, just like some Montecristo cigars.
In addition, the vitolas and numerical nomenclature used by Diplomáticos to identify regular production vitolas are similar to Montecristo.
Now that the context of our cigar is mentioned, let's proceed to the tasting of this young man more than two decades old...
Our guest today is dressed in a beautiful maduro wrapper, oily, perfectly applied and seems to have benefited from a careful construction judging by the homogeneity of the filling. A very nice cigar!
The raw draw is distinctly cedar driven.
Immediately after lighting, the start is very fine and fresh with nice touches of eucalyptus. Flavors unexpectedly surprising!
Notes of precious wood are also part of the party and take over at the end of the first third.
We then perceive dusts of wood, in a very pronounced way, cedar as well as a hint of fresh nut...
The divine takes us gently onto sweet spices, white pepper without distorting the Diplomáticos No.1, still dominated by woody flavors.
After more than 20 years, it has lost some of its complexity and elegance, the aromas are more direct and therefore less subtle. The more the cigar burns, the more the aromas become accentuated.
The middle of the second third announces notes of leather and becomes rounder and more balanced, even greedy!
We find here the identity of this cigar that we had not tasted for many years now. Its evolution is progressive, and it evolves through several gustatory identities.
The third and last third rises in power, the coffee grounds settle down for a final worthy of its reputation.
The notes of eucalyptus, which resurface surprise us as it is not common, but very pleasant in this case!
A medium-bodied cigar that reminds us what a true Cuban vintage is capable of offering us. Paired with a mineral champagne, they come together in perfect harmony…
