Liga Privada

A brand born from Drew Estate's private blends.

Liga Privada, which means 'private blend', is a cigar brand comprising several lines that will interest us today. This name was chosen because, originally, the blends that make up these lines were not intended to be sold, but to remain in the personal humidors of Drew Estate, the brand to which these different ranges belong.

Let's start with Liga Privada No. 9: the cigars in this line are made from 7 different tobaccos, from 7 different cultures. The wrapper is a Connecticut Broadleaf #1 Darks, the binder is grown on the Mata Fina plantations in Brazil and the filler is assembled from a myriad of Honduran and Nicaraguan tobaccos. They are aged for 1 year before being offered for sale. This line is characterised by flavours of black pepper and spices emanating from a dense, robust smoke, resulting in a cigar whose strength ranges from medium to strong.

The Liga Privada No. 9 offers 9 different vitolas: the Parejo Toro (52 x 152 mm); the Figurado Belicoso (52 x 152 mm); the Parejo Robusto (54 x 127 mm); the Parejo Corona Doble (54 x 178 mm); the Flying Pig (60 x 100 mm); the Corona Viva (48 x 152 mm); the Short Panatela (46 x 114 mm); the Petit Corona (46 x 108 mm) and the Coronet (32 x 95 mm). They are available in boxes of 24 or 48.

Then there's the Liga Privada T52: a limited edition, meticulously blended over a period of 2 years with different tobacco combinations, before the perfect blend is achieved. It comes with a very special wrapper, the Connecticut Habano. The T52 contains a unique blend of tobacco cut from the stem and hand-rolled by the brand's top torcedors. Black pepper and spicy notes reign supreme in every draw.

The range comprises 9 vitolas: the Robusto (54 x 127 mm); the Toro (52 x 152 mm); the Belicoso (52 x 152 mm); the Corona Doble (54 x 178 mm); the Flying Pig (60 x 100 mm); the Corona Viva (48 x 152 mm); the Short Panatela (46 x 114 mm); the Petit Corona (46 x 108 mm) and the Coronet (32 x 95 mm). They are available in boxes of 12 or 24 cigars.

Then there's the Liga Privada Único Serie: as part of the regular production of the Liga Privada line, numerous blends are created in search of the perfect smoke. Hundreds of samples are rejected, but only a few are interesting enough to be dedicated to a single line, the Único Serie. In this way, these vitolas have links with the Liga Privada No. 9 or the Liga Privada T52 in terms of the tobaccos used. The cigars are all different, not only in size but also in blend, they are very special (like their name) and extremely limited. In some cases, they are regional cigars, exclusive to a shop or reserved for an event.
There are no fewer than 11 vitolas in the series: the Dirty Rat (44 x 127 mm); the A (47 x 228 mm); the L40 Lancero (40 x 177 mm); the Ratzilla (46 x 158 mm); the Feral Flying Pig (60 x 137 mm); the Papas Fritas (44 x 114 mm); the UF-13 Dark (52 x 140 mm); the Velvet Rat (46 x 159 mm); the Nasty Fritas (52 x 102 mm); the UF-4 (52 x 152 mm) and finally, the Year of the Rat (46 x 140 mm).

We'll conclude with the Liga Privada H99: over the line's 10-year history, the desire to create ever more exceptional cigars has taken root. The H99 is made up of a Corojo wrapper from the Connecticut River Valley, which wraps a binder made from San Andres Otapan Negro Último Corte tobacco. Inside is a filler of aged Nicaraguan and Honduran tobaccos. The main aromas are classic wood, baker's spice, cherry cream, and black pepper.

The vitola chosen for this line is a Toro (52 x 152 mm), available in boxes of 24.

About the brand:

Jonathan Drew got his start in the cigar industry when he began selling cigars from a small kiosk in New York's World Trade Center in 1995. A year later he was joined by one of his fraternity mates, Marvin Samel, and together the duo soon founded Drew Estate Inc.

Even though they were not originally from the tobacco industry at all, they enjoyed their first success with the creation of ACID, one of their sub-brands whose innovative cigars are infused with herbs, oils, and essential plants. They then followed this up with the launch of Liga Privada in 2007, which also received acclaim. Since then, Drew Estate has developed more than twenty lines, each with its own unique character.

After making their cigars for more than 10 years in a small factory in Estelí, Nicaragua, Jonathan and Marvin acquired a greenfield site overlooking a valley and tobacco fields in the same region and began building their factory in September 2006.
Opened in July 2007, the Gran Fabrica Drew Estate is truly impressive: it is the largest cigar factory in Nicaragua and one of the five largest premium cigar factories in the world. 94,000 handmade cigars are produced here every day, in a bright and open working atmosphere decorated by countless hand-painted murals. It's a blend of Nicaraguan culture and art inspired by the brand and painted by the talented artists of Drew Estate's Subculture Studio.

Liga Privada's constant quest for the ideal has led it to create hundreds of different blends and vitolas. Although almost all the samples have a rare aroma that borders on taste perfection, they are not viable on the market. However, their perfect taste and aroma are so captivating that the company was driven to continue developing them. The result is the Liga Privada Unico Serie, an exclusive collection of these exceptional cigars. Each cigar is not only different in size and character, but also very limited and incredibly delicious.
