Avo Heritage

A line resulting from a collaboration between two tobacco legends.

Born from a collaboration between Avo Uvezian, the founder of AVO and Hendrik Kelner, one of the most influential tobacco men in the Dominican Republic, the AVO Heritage line surprises with its smoothness and variety of flavors.

Developed and hand-rolled in the O.K. Cigars factory in the Dominican Republic, the AVO Heritage cigar features a silky wrapper from Ecuador, enveloping a full-flavored Dominican wrapper and filler. The blend includes a surprising amount of Ligero tobacco leaves offering some complexity to the palate. This line comes in three modules: the Avo Heritage Special Toro, the Avo Heritage Short Robusto and finally, the Avo Heritage Robusto.

Small review of the different cigars:

Let's start with the Heritage Special Toro (60 x 152 mm): it is the most generous format of the collection. Its slightly oily wrapper delivers light, creamy aromas first, evolving into spicier notes of cinnamon and coffee beans and finishing on an earthy note. The draw has a slight resistance, producing a perfect amount of smoke. Tasting time for this cigar is approximately 90 minutes.

Let's continue with the Heritage Short Robusto (56 x 102 mm): Perfectly constructed and wrapped in its beautiful dark Ecuadorian wrapper, this vitola offers earthy scents accented by notes of black pepper. This medium bodied cigar gains in intensity during the degustation, leaving a leathery aroma on the palate.

The collection ends with the Heritage Robusto (50 x 127 mm): this vitola has a beautiful appearance with a smooth and slightly oily wrapper. The flavors that emanate from it are those of wood, cedar, roasted almonds, all balanced by a hint of sweetness. Its strength evolves from medium to strong.

The cigars of the Heritage collection are dressed in the classic "Avo" ring stamped with the logo of the brand and a golden lettering. They are presented in an elegant lacquered wooden box, including 20 cigars.

About the brand:

Born in 1926 in Beirut, Avo Uvezian began his musical career at a young age. Pianist and composer, he will be recognized for his talent in the world of jazz. During a trip to Switzerland in 1983 for the baptism of his daughter, he will taste a Cuban cigar and will not hide his shock at its price. Avo will then decide to elaborate cigars for his personal use.

He then moved to Puerto Rico and opened a piano bar, where he gave his customers a first taste of the cigars he made himself. Everyone being impressed by the flavor and quality of the vitolas, Avo Uvezian will decide to launch his own cigar brand.

He met Davidoff's cigar maker, Hendrik Kelner, who helped him sell his first cigars under the "Bolero" label in San Juan. He quickly changed the name of his brand to "AVO" and marketed his cigars in New York, USA.

In 1995, Davidoff will buy the distribution rights of AVO and Avo Uvezian will see its production increase to 3.2 million cigars in 1997, against 5000 in 1987. Thus, he will continue to flourish in the tobacco business for many years.

"People always ask me, Avo, what's your secret?" he said at the time. "And I tell them that every time you smoke a cigar, you get an extra day of life. I think I'm going to do that until I'm 99 years old. That way, when I get to 99, I'll think, Well, I might as well go to 100."

Sadly, he will pass away on March 24, 2017, at the age of 91. Avo Uvezian will leave behind his wife, Nivia, his sons Robert, Jeffrey and Ronny and his daughter Karyn.
