La Flor Dominicana Andalusian Bull

An ancient model brought up-to-date as a tribute to the Toreros of Spain.

Several years ago, Litto Gomez, the founder of La Flor Dominicana, discovered an old and unusually shaped cigar mold during a trip to southern Spain. Although it was well used, this mold was reproduced and used for the design of a new cigar in homage to the famous Toreros of Spain: the Andalusian Bull.

This atypical cigar, which was introduced to the general public at IPCPR 2016 in Las Vegas, features a beautiful, naturally dark Ecuadorian Corojo wrapper, covering a Dominican wrapper and filler both from Estancia La Flor de Palma, the farm shared by La Flor Dominicana and Tabacalera Palma. It is manufactured in Tabacalera La Flor farm owned by the Gomez, in the Dominican Republic and although it is produced continuously, it joins the catalog of limited edition of La Flor Dominicana. Indeed, it is not manufactured in the same quantities as the main lines of the brand, but is not limited to a fixed number of production.

As mentioned, its name, the Andalusian Bull is a nod to Litto Gomez's home country of Spain and its Corrida culture in Andalusia. The cigar comes in the form of a Figurado (64 x 165 mm) dressed in a majestic green ring, similar to the Andalusian flag’s color. It is stamped with a matador silhouette, accompanied by the initials "LFD". The "Andalusian Bull" typography on the banner recalls Pablo Picasso’s handwriting, who loved to paint bulls. Composed of 10 cigars, the varnished wooden box has the same colors as the ring, decorated with nice gold finishes. Under each cigar there is a golden ribbon, which allows to remove it easily and without damage.

So, let's move on to the tasting of this cigar:

The Andalusian Bull is far from easy to roll. This Figurado has a perfect and imposing cylindrical construction whose cap is distinguished by a pointed "Torpedo" shape. Its wrapper is extremely smooth with a thin oily layer making the vitola all the more silky. It is a relatively powerful cigar.

The mixture of spices which emanates from it offers complex flavours raised by pepper, leather, cumin and even saffron. With each puff, a subtle hint of chocolate softens and balances the draw which is particularly pleasant. This vitola produces a dense and creamy smoke showing a perfect combustion, although it is a little slow. The smoking time of the Andalusian Bull offers a tasting of 2 hours and a half to 3 hours. In consideration of its rather full-bodied profile, this is a cigar that will delight experienced aficionados. This cigar is a reflection of Litto Gomez's brilliant work and know-how.

About the brand:

La Flor Dominicana has none of the history you're used to in the tobacco industry. Litto Gomez has no family history in cigars, no transmitted know-how and no Cuban lineage. He was born in Spain and raised in Uruguay and started making cigars in 1994 after a stint in the jewelry business.

Initially, the cigars he produced had a mild profile, but Litto quickly caught the attention of cigar enthusiasts when he began creating increasingly powerful vitolas with unusual sizes. Together with his wife Ines Gomes, they founded La Flor Dominicana in 1996 in Santiago, Dominican Republic. The name of the brand is inspired by the flower of the tobacco plant, which appears when its growth cycle is complete and the plant is ready for reproduction.

Ines and her husband Litto really stand out in the cigar market by creating innovative vitolas with unconventional and original formats and designs, which allows La Flor Dominicana to differentiate itself from other Dominican brands. We can mention the famous Chisel with its atypical wedge-shaped cap, or the El Jocko Perfecto, which looks like a bowling pin. In addition, the company completely masters each step of the culture and manufacture of a cigar, which testifies to the outstanding know-how of the Gomez couple. Today, the company has a modern and impressive cigar factory in Tamboril, Dominican Republic.
