La Galera Anemoi

A collection in homage to the Anemoi, the Greek gods of wind.

Inspired by Greek mythology, the famous brand La Galera has launched a new line that pays tribute to the gods of the wind in 2019. The latter has been named Anemoi: this is how the Greeks, geniuses in their own right, named these divinities, each representing one of the cardinal directions from which their breeze comes. Indeed, if it is not considered as essential, the wind has nevertheless an influence on the growth of tobacco.

The collection is composed of 5 distinct modules, 4 are named after one of these gods and the last one has the same name as the collection, "Anemoi", as if it represented it in its entirety. Jose Arnaldo Blanco, the founder of the brand, has chosen as a wrapper, the famous Connecticut Broadleaf. However, the rest of the blend is exclusively Dominican, with a mixture of Criollo 98 and Piloto Cubano tobaccos grown in La Canela, as well as a Corojo binder from Jacagua.

They are all elaborated in Jose Blanco's tobacco farm, Tabacalera Palma, located in the Dominican Republic, and then packed in boxes of 20 pieces.

Let's discover the different cigars:

Let's start with the Anemoi Boreas (46 x 120 mm): Medium bodied, it delivers notes of coffee, coconut and leather. Its Colorado cape from Connecticut is very smooth. It represents the north wind, carrying clouds into the Ciabo Valley during the rainy season and allowing perfect watering of the crops.

Let's continue with the Anemoi Notus (56 x 127 mm): a perfectly constructed vitola. It presents an impeccable wrapper, offering, woody, earthy and vegetal notes. It is a rather seductive and well-balanced cigar. It is named after the god of the south wind, the rarest of the four, which usually occurs only when a hurricane or storm crosses the island. The tobacco plants are thus more robust and produce thicker leaves.

Then comes the Anemoi Eurus (48 x 140 mm): it offers a gourmet tasting with notes of milk chocolate, citrus and spices. This cigar is very well balanced and can be enjoyed at any time of the day. Its name refers to the east wind, which remains constant throughout the year and acts as a dehumidifier and purifier for plants. It therefore prevents excess humidity and diseases.

Moving on to the Anemoi Zephyrus (60 x 152 mm): impressive in its size and build, this cigar has an impeccable construction, highlighted by the Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper. Hints of leather, roasted coffee and nuts emerge from its smoke. The west wind is an indicator of rain and thus a predictor of weather. It brings precipitation that feeds the main regions that produce tobacco in the Dominican Republic, such as Santiago, Tamboril and Moca.

The collection ends with the Anemoi Anemoi (52 x 162 mm): this vitola seduces at first glance. It is the most generous module of the collection, its construction is rather firm and presents a beautiful smooth Colorado wrapper. The first puffs fill the palate with woody notes and wet earth then evolve towards more animalic notes with a touch of leather.

The cigars of the collection are dressed with a double ring stamped with the blue La Galera logo. Around the main ring, the finishes are reminiscent of Greek sculptures, while the secondary ring is inscribed with the name of each cigar in Greek typography.

About the brand:

Since his early childhood, Jose Arnaldo Blanco or "Jochy" to his friends, has been entirely devoted to his passion, the cigar. He has gone through all the steps in the elaboration of a superior quality cigar, from the seed to the box and masters them all. He has spent most of his life in the Dominican Republic, in the city that many refer to as "the capital of cigars", Tamboril.

It was when he smoked his first cigar from his uncle's farm at the age of 15 that Jose knew he was destined to become a great cigar maker.

For several years he worked as a salesman, sales coordinator or director of promotions and public relations for different tobacco companies, before taking over the factory that his father had opened in 1925, the Tabacalera Palma, to make it his own tobacco farm.

This farm takes its name from "La Galera", the place where the torcedores work their magic and transform the dried tobacco leaves into cigars. This is where La Galera cigars are born, synonymous with work, quality and regularity. Inside, the tobaccos used are chosen to highlight the terroir, selecting the best acres of the Ciabo Valley. In addition to its farms in Santiago, Jochy grows tobacco in La Canela, Gurabo, Jacagua and Mao.

Established for several decades, the brand has become a classic among aficionados. To this day, as he takes a gentle pull on his cigar and looks at the empire he has created in front of his eyes, Jose Blanco realizes that this is all he ever wanted.
