Villiger 1888

A line whose muses are the Dominican Republic and Nicaragua.

The Villiger 1888 line refers to the year of creation of the famous Villiger cigar brand and of the first vitola it has elaborated. It was launched when this Swiss-German cigar maker celebrated its 120th anniversary and for the occasion, it was no other than Heinrich Villiger himself who selected the tobaccos to make these high-quality cigars.

This range is divided in two parts: at first the 1888 Dominican Republic was born, followed by the 1888 Nicaragua. The first one is declined in 5 Dominican vitolas; a Minuto (30 x 102 mm); a Robusto (50 x 122 mm); a Toro (50 x 152 mm); a Torpedo (52 x 152 mm) and a Corona (43 x 151 mm). Meanwhile, the Nicaraguan line offers 3 sizes; a Coronita (43 x 108 mm); a Robusto (50 x 127 mm) and a Toro (50 x 152 mm).

To begin, we'll highlight the 1888 Dominican Republic line: it was introduced in December 2016 at a launch party held in Miami, Florida, but had previously made an appearance in 2010 as a limited-edition cigar. To this day, the vitolas of this line consist of a Dominican and Nicaraguan filler wrapped in a Mexican binder. The toasted caramel wrapper is Ecuadorian and has a slight oily surface. The cigars are rolled in the Dominican Republic, in the ABAM Cigars factory in Santo Domingo.

The 1888 Dominican Republic vitolas are distinguished by their natural tobacco and fruit aromas, complemented by floral, chocolate and baking spice notes. Their combustion is relatively regular and offers a rather dense smoke characterized by an easy, slightly resistant draw. Concerning the power, it increases as the tasting goes on, passing from medium to full-bodied.

The ring that dresses the cigars presents a meticulous and worked design, on the upper part we find the emblem and the name of "VILLIGER" in golden characters, stamped on a burgundy background. The lower part is bright red with the name of the line "1888", surrounded by a gold and black border.

There are different formats for the packaging, bearing the same bright red as the ring: in fact, the Minutos is available in a pack of 8 only, presented in an aluminum case. As for the Robusto, it is available in a box of 20 units, but also in a pack of 3, just like the Corona, the Torpedo and the Toro.

Now we'll move on to the presentation of the 1888 Nicaragua line: it's "the new star in Villiger's sky" as the brand likes to call it. It was 14 years after the launch of 1888 Dominican Republic, in 2022, that the Swiss-based company decided to launch 1888 Nicaragua. As mentioned earlier, it features 3 vitolas of different sizes: a Coronita; a Robusto and a Toro. Their blend is as follows: the Maduro wrapper comes from Ecuador and the binder from Nicaragua. The filler was chosen by experts from the recently opened Villiger factory in Nicargua and Villiger Söhne in Germany, after offering different blends to a panel of 70 smokers. It consists of Seco Jalapa, Viso Jalapa, Ligero Condega and Pennsylvania tobacco leaves.

Regarding the tasting, the tobacco is of medium intensity and is characterized by notes of chocolate, leather, hay, honey and a side more raised white pepper. The smoke that emanates from the combustion is particularly aromatic, offering a pleasant tasting.

The presentation of the vitolas and the design of the ring is quite similar to the 1888 Dominican Republic, we find the emblem and the name of the brand in gold lettering, as well as the date "1888", but on a dark blue background this time.

The packaging has evolved, the Villiger 1888 Nicaragua Coronita, Robusto and Toro are now available in cabinets of 20 pieces. The latter uses the same blue of the ring, with the words "Handmade in Nicaragua" on the upper part. This is the latest addition to Villiger's collections.
