Simon Maye & Fils

The famous wine estate of Valais.

The story begins in 1948 when Simon Maye founded his own estate of 4 hectares in the vineyards of Chamoson in Valais. Two years later, his wife Antoinette joined him to develop the estate having in mind a respectful approach to the environment. Quite different from the methods of that time, this initiative, aiming at letting the vines live at the rhythm of nature, was actually very pioneering and had subsequently contributed a lot to the success of the affairs.

After extending the cellar and acquiring new vine plots, the estate now comprises 12 hectares and produces around 80,000 bottles per year.

1980 was a very important year because the two sons of Antoinette and Simon, Axel and Jean-François joined the family estate. The first one works in the cellar and in the management of the domain after having studied commerce and oenology at the university. The second is involved in working on the site after having completed viticulture and oenology studies in Changins school and having worked in Germany and California.

That same year they decided to plant Syrah. The first harvests arrived in 1984. Simon Maye’s perseverance and passion for quality have borne its fruits: Syrah has become one of spearheads of the estate, which is one of the most famous in Valais and the whole country and has often been rewarded in Switzerland and abroad. Simon Maye’s and his family’s work of high quality had a major influence to the international expansion of Swiss wines.

In 2015, Raphaël, Jean-François' son joined the domain and thus constituted the third generation. Graduated with a master's degree in oenology, he is passionate about wines and has joined his elders to live the common family passion: that of loving wines. He rarely uses mechanical help and respects the nature, trying to intervene the least possible.

Each parcel of their vineyards is worked with a constant passion for quality and with a harmonious approach of the viticulture. The use of herbicides and synthetic products is renounced, and each wine has its own personality. The wine production depends on the observations during the harvest season and on daily tastings. The wines are then kept the necessary amount of time for them to evolve and to enrich.
