A legend wrapped in tobacco
The brand Gilbert de Montsalvat draws its inspiration from a fictional yet strikingly lifelike character, brought to life through the novel Perpetuum Fumabile by Thomas Brunnschweiler, a passionate pipe and cigar connoisseur.
Gilbert Bénédict Augustin de Montsalvat — if he didn’t exist, someone would have had to invent him. Born in 1920 in Burgundy, son of Hugo Comte de Montsalvat and Arlette Baronesse de Fontainville, he led a life that crossed borders, cultures, and eras.
From academic years at Cambridge to encounters with Freud, Che Guevara, and JFK, Montsalvat’s story intertwines with key figures and moments of the 20th century. He witnessed the Cuban revolution, advised Hollywood celebrities on cigars, and authored the legendary Grand Cigar Guide, dedicated to his late friend Zino Davidoff. Despite his incredible journey, Montsalvat preferred anonymity to fame — spending his later years quietly in Switzerland, writing memoirs and preserving his legacy through tobacco.
More than a fictional persona, Montsalvat embodies the romantic spirit of cigar culture — worldliness, depth, and passion wrapped in every leaf.
