Punch Poderosos Edición Regional Suiza 2009

The brand's one and only Sublimes, rolled exclusively for Switzerland.

As August starts with the Swiss bank holidays, the 1st, we felt like dipping into our reserves of "Torcido exclusivamente para Suiza" cigars and our eyes fell on a cabinet of Punch Poderosos, which we sampled on the occasion of this new Grauer Journal.

The Poderosos, released in 2009, was the third vitola in Edición Regional Suiza at the time. It followed the Punch Robusto of 2005, re-released in 2007, and was also the second cigar of the brand produced exclusively for the Swiss Confederation. Since then, the brand has amply demonstrated its popularity with Swiss aficionados, as to date, five of the 18 Edición Regional Suiza have been produced by Punch, which puts the brand in the lead, ahead of Ramón Allones, who has produced four cigars exclusively for Switzerland.

The vitola chosen by Punch for this regional edition is the Sublimes (54 x 164 mm), which is still the only one produced by the brand. More commonly known as the Double Robusto, the module is one of the most frequently used in Regional Editions. Indeed, there have been no less than 11 Sublimes produced in regional editions since 2005. Among them, one was produced exclusively for Switzerland: the 2016 Juan López Eminentes.

More generally, the Sublimes module is reserved for special productions, Edición Limitada, La Casa del Habano or in the commemorative humidor for the 165th anniversary of Partagás, as no Habanos brand offers it in standard production. Its generous dimensions offer us almost an hour and a half of rich flavours that we will share with you.

The production of the Poderosos is limited to only 2'400 individually numbered cabinets of 25 cigars.

Let's proceed to the tasting and check if the "Powerful" in English lives up to its name.

In appearance, it has a very beautiful Colorado wrapper, smooth and oily. The very discreet veining testifies to the quality of the leaves used. To the touch, the Poderosos seems generously filled. However, the softness suggests a careful construction and consequently an excellent draw. The proportions and plasticity of the Poderosos make it a truly beautiful cigar, not to say "sublime", and invite us to savour it.

When raw, no single flavour seems to predominate, a harmonious woody bouquet emerges.

From the very first puffs, the cigar offers us an incredibly generous volume of smoke, white and dense. The ash, very clear and perfectly streaked with the rhythm of the draw, is solid and well hung.

In terms of the flavours it offers us, the Poderosos cannot deny its pedigree, at least for this first part, we are indeed in the presence of a Punch. Soft, balanced, harmonious with woody, almost resinous notes.

The second part becomes slightly more powerful and the woody notes are truly in the register of "white woods" like fir. Note the entry of spicy notes which give rhythm to the whole.

At the last third, the Poderosos takes another direction and leads us towards leather and earth, rather rare flavours for the brand. The woody notes are still present but in the background. The very end will not finally go up in power. Some may be left wanting more, but the Poderosos offers a pleasant tasting experience to say the least, believe us!

To call it that was probably a bit ambitious for a Punch. On the other hand, with its perfect construction, the smoke it gives off and the roundness of its flavours, the Poderosos does not need to be strong and will be a perfect companion on a summer afternoon.
