For centuries, Cuba has been at the heart of rum-making by virtue of its world-famous sugarcane and over time the spirit has evolved to become the heart and soul of the nation. Thanks to its tropical climate and the richness of the soil, the island focused on producing high-quality raw materials to craft rums that are globally renowned. For iconic Cuban rum brand Havana Club, Cuba is a North Star, its starting point.
If Cuba’s environment contributes to the making of Havana Club’s exceptional rums - the weather, the temperature, the soil, the sugarcane – the most critical component remains it’s the people. The Cuban people, trusting a team of Maestros del Ron Cubano, have given Cuban rum a dimension that few other spirits have reached. The Maestros study the art of rum-making for more than fifteen years to become the guardians of the Cuban rum tradition and oversee the production of the Spirit of Cuba from start to finish.
Maestro del Ron Cubano Asbel Morales has been working with Havana Club for close to 15 years in the brand’s Ronera in San José de Las Lajas, a 40-min drive from vibrant Havana. He began his apprenticeship when he was just 20 years old, learning and crafting rum from the island’s Masters. One can often hear him say, while walking around the Havana Club Ronera, that "making Havana Club starts as science and ends as art". When he created what then became the Tributo series in 2016, Asbel Morales thought of it as a tribute to the art of making rum that had become his life’s work.
On the birth of the Tributo range, Morales says "Creating the Havana Club Tributo Collection is a fascinating process, as each release will provide a new and unique taste experience, achieved through experimentation with rum bases from our reserves". A series of 6 truly exceptional rums that give tribute to the spirit itself, its history, its character, its evolution.
To craft Tributo 2021, Asbel Morales was inspired by the 1st release of 2016. He took a similar path as for the previous editions, selecting the rum bases himself from a hundred white oak casks within Havana Club’s cellars’ most cherished rum reserves. The bases were then assembled to be exclusively matured in special white port casks from the Douro Valley. The casks sit in Havana Club’s ageing cellars in San José, taking their time to finish what will be an intense and complex rum, encapsulating the spirit of Cuba in every mouthful. The resulting rum delivers a delectably rounded flavour enhanced by subtle hints of apricot, nuts and honey, created by the marriage between blend and barrel.
Tributo 2021 was awarded the prestigious "Master" award at the Spirits Business and Drinks Business Autumn Tasting in September 2021.
