La Galera Anemoi Notus

Inspired by the Greek gods and refined by the forces of the nature.

The winds play a crucial role in tobacco growing, acting as invaluable guides to determine the ideal time to cultivate this plant and the best places for it to grow. Exploring history, La Galera discovered that the Greeks also understood the importance of the winds.

The Greeks, who had a deep connection with nature, had deities dedicated to the winds, known as Anemoi. Each wind direction was associated with its own god. Thus, Boreas represented the north wind, Notos was the south wind, Eurus symbolised the east wind and Zephyrus was the god of the west wind. Each breath of wind contributed to shaping a successful or disastrous harvest. That’s why La Galera has decided to pay tribute to their influence.

In the Dominican Republic, where Jochy grows its tobacco, the balance of winds is often optimal, and each direction brings benefits or can harm the quality of the harvest. The northerly winds provide a fresh, constant breeze, contributing to the slow, balanced ripening of the tobacco leaves. Southern winds, personified by Notos, bring warmth and humidity, helping to develop rich, complex aromas. Winds from the East provide a delicate sweetness and light humidity, favouring a silky texture and uniform combustion. Finally, the West winds provide a light freshness and subtle notes, adding a touch of complexity to the cigars.

The south wind is the least frequent of the four directions and generally occurs when a hurricane or storm crosses the island. These winds are often the most powerful and bring more rainfall, but they die out quickly, either because the storm dissipates, the mountains interrupt it or considerably reduce its intensity. Excessively strong winds cause plant roots to sink deeper into the soil, resulting in thicker leaves and veins. Deeper roots can lead to a higher concentration of nicotine, and therefore a stronger tobacco.

The wrapper of this dark robusto has a shimmering grey hue. It gives off woody, salty notes that evolve into a pronounced, slightly rough charcoal character. The cigar burns evenly and the draw remains constant throughout.

The cigar is made from Criollo 98 from the Dominican Republic, which is reputed to be one of the world’s best tobacco producers, offering a range of filler tobaccos from mild to full-bodied. Among the varieties grown in this Caribbean country are Olor Dominicano and Piloto Cubano.
